Hi, I'm Juliet Chowdhury
I've been helping people feel at home in English, and in Los Angeles, since 1996.
I started LA English Academy because I love seeing the moment a student realizes they can do it: when they order dinner, give a presentation, or talk with their child's teacher in English without being afraid.
My students come from all over the world. Some arrive in Los Angeles not speaking any English at all. Others are professionals who need to write and present with more confidence, students preparing for the TOEFL, or kids who need some extra help at school. Every one of them gets a plan that's made for them.
My background
I've taught English in Los Angeles since 1996. I spent my first years at Berlitz in Santa Monica, where I became a district instructional supervisor and was named Berlitz International Teacher of the Year. Then I opened LA English Academy in Torrance, and today I teach online and across LA's Westside.
I studied political science with a minor in law, which gave me a love of clear writing, careful argument and good conversation. Over my years teaching English, I've also trained new teachers preparing for their TESOL/TEFL certification, so I know not just what to teach, but how people actually learn a language.
How I teach
I use a communicative, conversation-based approach. We spend our time actually using English, talking about your life, your work and your interests, and I help you with the phrasing, grammar and pronunciation along the way, including the way Americans really speak.
Learning should be fun. Over the years my classes have taken field trips to the California Science Center to see the Space Shuttle Endeavour, celebrated students' birthdays, shared potlucks, and practiced English over dinner.
